Working with an energy company wasn’t something I saw coming, but my time at Spire turned out to be one of the most rewarding experiences of my 10+ year design career.

I had the opportunity to broaden my skills—taking on animation projects, helping redevelop the website, leading design process for campaigns and even joining photo shoots out in the field. This collection highlights some of the work I’m most proud of from that chapter.

Animation

At Spire, animation became a key tool for both external and internal communications. Many of the animations were designed to educate and engage customers across our service areas, while others were created for internal audiences—playing on the company intranet, in building lobbies, or on SpireTV.

Each animation project started with storyboarding and concept development, working closely with our producer to craft unique, story-driven visuals that communicated complex information in a clear, approachable way.

Social Animation

With social animations, we varied posts between different channels, changing dimensions for each. We also tested paid vs. organic, and post vs. reels.

Internal Champions Program

While external campaigns helped educate customers on the value of natural gas, Spire wanted to bring that same energy inward—creating an internal program for employees across Missouri, Alabama, and Mississippi.

The result was the Champions Program, a platform offering virtual workshops that covered the benefits, cost savings, and safety of natural gas. These sessions empowered employees to carry that knowledge into their day-to-day work and conversations.

I developed a wide range of creative deliverables to promote participation, recognize employees, and build pride around being a Natural Gas Champion—strengthening both engagement and brand alignment from the inside out.

This is one of five impact videos I animated for our lobby at Spire headquarters in St. Louis, MO. These videos spanned the width of an entire wall, about 50 feet wide.

PAYS Program

Spire partnered with Ameren and Evergy to launch the PAYS (Pay As You Save) program in the Kansas City area. This initiative offered free home energy assessments, helping residents identify opportunities for upgrades and long-term savings on energy bills.

As part of the creative team, we developed comprehensive brand guidelines to ensure that all program materials—from Spire, Ameren, and Evergy—maintained a cohesive look and feel. We also created social media assets to promote the program and drive community engagement.

Rural Marketing Campaign

To increase awareness and usage in Alabama, Mississippi and Missouri rural markets, our team launched a targeted campaign promoting Spire’s energy services. Because these area are deregulated, customers and businesses have the freedom to choose their energy provider—making brand presence especially important in competitive areas.

I collaborated with the external communications team to shape the campaign concept, visual style, and presentation materials. One of the biggest challenges was bridging the geographic and cultural gap—understanding consumer behaviour in rural areas while being based in metropolitan St. Louis. Budget limitations also required us to be especially strategic with media placement and creative choices. Unfortuantely, this campaign was short-lived due to budget cuts.

United Way Campaign

United Way has been a long-standing charity partner at Spire, and in 2022, I was tasked with refreshing the campaign to boost employee engagement. We introduced a sports-themed concept that encouraged friendly competition between regions to see who could raise the most for United Way.

I led the creative direction by developing a primary campaign logo, along with athletic-inspired supporting graphics and typography. From kickoff to execution, I took this project head-on—delivering a cohesive, high-energy design system that helped drive participation and enthusiasm across teams.
